Laurie A.E. O'MearaArtist and Horticulturist
Cape Cod, Massachusetts United States of America
Welcome to my website. I am an artist who lives on Cape Cod, Massachusetts. I obtained a degree in horticulture in order to enhance my botanical painting and illustration. I also have an interest in vintage sewing machines and spinning fibers into yarn. I feel preserving our American sewing and spinning history is important, especially as we move into more and more of a global economy. I use hand spindles to spin and I use treadle or hand crank sewing machines, not only because it is fun :), but I feel conserving electrical energy is as important as preserving clean air, water conservation, recycling materials, and saving our forests. These may sound like diverse topics, but in actuality, they all tie together: my love of art and horticulture has brought me to a deeper understanding of the role of plants, trees, water and energy on our planet. For several years I had a very large website with all of with my art, horticulture, and vintage sewing information. I now divide my interests between my two websites, New England Simple Living © which is this site, and PenStroke Studio © which contains my art and horticulture. Links are at the left and above for areas of interest. I will be adding to this site gradually, please visit again.
When you get the chance, please plant a tree.

I am very particular about allowing advertising or extraneous information on my websites. Below are a few subjects or pages that I feel are important to mention:
There was a Catholic priest in Hawaii who worked with the sufferers of leprosy on Molokai. I always knew I would have struggled with the same type of unconditional acceptance that Father Damien lived. Below is a video by a Hawaiian artist, Israel "Iz" Kamakawiwo'ole, who may have also struggled with acceptance in some ways, but overcame it in many more ways. He sings my favorite song in this video, and is a daily reminder to me to try to be a better person, to hear the Light in his voice, and to remember the example of Father Damien in his life of service.
