Hand-Carved Weaving Battens
(also may be used as pick-up sticks)
After over 30 years as a fine artist, and several years as a weaver, I have begun to hand-carve my own weaving battens. This grew out of a love of using a good tool, and a frustration at being able to easily find a traditionally-shaped batten. I use Southern White Pine and aged White Birch. I also use Mahogany, Purplewood, and East Indian Rosewood. I carve the tips and handles by knife, and use simple non-electric hand tools to shape the rest of the batten. I believe each weaver should choose their own tools, and the slight imperfections or irregularities in my battens is not only what "hand-carved" is all about, it allows each to be an individual piece. I believe the slower method of hand-carving each piece imparts a connection between nature and the wonderful tools we are able to grasp from its splendor.
