Simply Art © Simply Basic © Christmas Stocking Pattern V Crochet - "Heritage Stocking" Regular Size
This pattern is for a basic Christmas stocking that is easy to crochet in hand-spun yarn. The pattern is written for use with hand-spun Navajo-Churro wool, a wool that represents my own heritage, but you may substitute commercial worsted-weight wool yarn if you wish. This simple, yet pretty, stocking pattern is based on old-fashioned classic stockings, similar to what I myself had as a child. The colors of the wool I used are meant to reflect the thoughts of “Dasher”, “Donner”, the other Reindeer, and the Spirit of Christmas. The real Saint Nicholas was a Bishop from Turkey, and perhaps he would have such a simple, yet reflective, stocking.
The pattern is written for a finished stocking length of 19 inches from the top cuff to the toe tip, with a 15 inch circumference around the top edge.
This stocking is easy to crochet with basic crochet stitches, and works up quickly.
NOTE on Yarn Weight: Navajo-Churro wool is a heavy, dense wool. My own wool spun to sport-weight yields approximately 30 yards per ounce before final fulling. Fulling, or the washing of the item gently after completion, will remove a little more lanolin, and the wool will be slighter lighter in weight. In addition, when crocheted, this wool type, which is stiff, works up more as a worsted weight, even when spun to sport-weight. I estimate I used about 330 yards of my home-spun wool. Your spinning results may vary, and any commercial worsted-weight yarn used as a substitute for my yarn should be purchased with the yardage as a guide and not the weight.
