Simply Basic © Christmas Stocking IV

Simply Art © Simply Basic © Christmas Stocking Knitting Pattern IV - "A Very Humble Stocking"

Regular Size

  Design (c) 2009 Laurie A. E. O'Meara

This pattern is for a simple and basic Christmas stocking that is easy to knit in sport-weight yarn on one circular needle.  It is based on old-fashioned classic stockings, similar to what I myself had as a child.  I call this stocking “A Very Humble Stocking”, and the design has three simple letters: “Joy”.  I have made the sample stocking in a beautiful color of Alpaca, and it is my own home-spun yarn.  The reddish tones of this fiber reminded me of Bethlehem, and Christmas morning, the simple message of “Joy”, and the humility of that day that I feel we should always remember.  The chart is included for the three letters only, and the chart is in color for ease of reading.  The pattern is written for a finished stocking length of 18 inches from the top cuff to the toe tip, with a 14 inch circumference around the top cuff.

It is easy to knit – the sample stocking took less than 24 hours to knit.

This pattern uses one circular needle to knit the majority of the stocking, with two sections being knit with straight single-point needles.  I specifically wrote this pattern for the ease of knitting. An heirloom-style stocking that will be cherished for generations.  Please read the entire pattern through for best results.

Please note:  I wrote this pattern for use with home-spun Alpaca yarn, but any sport-weight yarn may be used, including commercial yarns. In my stocking sample, I let the subtle variations of the fiber flow through the pattern.  When I had spun the yarn, I left the lightest colors in with the red, so throughout the stocking there are light areas.  These remind me of the flour that remains on baked gingerbread at Christmas-time.

Intarsia (two-color) knitting is not as easy to accomplish with circular knitting as it is with flat knitting.  The simple characters in this pattern are not all that difficult to knit due to their concise design of simple letters.  For a definition of intarsia knitting, please visit this link.  My knitting charts are also available individually for integration into this pattern, recommended for the intermediate to advanced knitter, please see the individual charts at Simply Art (c) Simply Basic (c) Knit Charts.

Materials:

Size 5, 16 inch circular needle

Size 5, 10 inch straight needle pair

1, 5 or 7 inch long stitch holder

Sport-weight yarn, 7.5 ounces “Red” or “Cinnamon” hand-spun Alpaca yarn, and 1 ounce White Cria (baby) hand-spun Alpaca yarn. (It’s always best to have a little extra of the same fiber or dye lot on hand)

My yarn is sport-weight hand-spun Alpaca and my yardage in spinning may be slightly different from yours if you use your own hand-spun yarn.

Nylon or monofilament sewing thread

Darning needle, safety pin to mark beginnings and ends of sections if desired

Stitch knowledge required:

Knit, purl, slip stitch for casting on, increasing knitwise, knit 2 together, binding off

Circular needle knitting creates the stockinette stitch by knitting each round, while straight-needle knitting creates the stockinette stitch by knitting one row and then purling one row.  Both stitch methods are used in this pattern.
