  Design (c) 2008 Laurie A. E. O'Meara

This pattern is for a straight, single point needle, flat-knitted basic Christmas stocking that is easy to knit in worsted weight yarn.  It is based on old-fashioned classic stockings, similar to what I myself had as a child.  Each stocking design depicts the name at the top, one simple motif, and the year.

Eight wonderful, yet easy-to-knit, designs are included – A Christmas Tree, “Our Good Shepard”, The Nativity, A Doll, A Cow, A Horse, A Sailboat, and The Dove of Peace.  Alphabet and number charts are also included, and all of the charts are in color for ease of reading.  The pattern is written for a finished stocking length of 24 inches from the top cuff to the toe tip, with a 15 inch circumference around the top cuff.

It is easy to knit – the sample stockings each took about 24 hours to knit.  It is also possible to knit this stocking in a 27 inch length, as can be seen as the green stocking in the photo.

Flat-knitted, in this pattern, means that the stocking is knitted in one long, flat piece, and then the seams are sewn together.  The pattern is wonderful for those who are trying intarsia (two color) knitting for the first time, but advanced knitters will also appreciate the number of designs which allow knitting of stockings for the whole family from this one pattern.  For a definition of intarsia knitting, please visit this link.

Materials:

  • -Size 8 straight single-point needles for ribbing and stocking (size 9 needles for longer version)

  • -Worsted weight yarn, 5.5 ounces total (It’s always best to have a little extra of the same dye lot on hand) (additional yarn will be needed for the longer version, approximately 6 ounces total)

  • -For a three-color 24 inch stocking, you will need 3.5 ounces of the main color, 1.5 ounces for the stripe, toe and heel, and 1/2 ounce for the name and single design.

  • -Nylon or monofilament sewing thread

  • -Darning needle, safety pin to mark beginnings and ends of sections if desired

Stitch knowledge required:

Knit, purl, slip stitch for casting on, increasing knitwise, knit 2 together, binding off
