Extra- Large Size

  Design (c) 2008 Laurie A. E. O'Meara

This pattern is for a simple basic Christmas stocking that is easy to knit in worsted weight yarn on one circular needle.  It is an extra-large 30 inches long.  It is based on old-fashioned classic stockings, similar in design to what I myself had as a child, in an extra-large size.  The single design has the name at the top, and the year in the lower portion of the stocking.  Alphabet and number charts are included, and the charts are in color for ease of reading.  The pattern is written for a finished stocking length of 30 inches from the top cuff to the toe tip, with a 16 inch circumference around the top cuff.

It is easy to knit – the sample stocking took less than 24 hours to knit.

This pattern uses one circular needle to knit the majority of the stocking, with two sections being knit with straight single-point needles.  I specifically wrote this pattern for the ease of knitting. An heirloom-style stocking that will be cherished for generations. Intarsia (two-color) knitting is not as easy to accomplish with circular knitting as it is with flat knitting.  The simple characters in this pattern are not all that difficult to knit due to their concise design of simple letters and numbers.  For a definition of intarsia knitting, please visit this link.  My knitting charts are also available individually for integration into this pattern, recommended for the intermediate to advanced knitter, please see the individual charts at Simply Art (c) Simply Basic (c) Knit Charts.

Materials:

Size 8, 16 inch circular needle

Size 8, 10 inch straight needle pair

1, 5 or 7 inch long stitch holder

Worsted weight yarn, 6 ounces total (It’s always best to have a little extra of the same dye lot on hand)

Nylon or monofilament sewing thread

Darning needle, safety pin to mark beginnings and ends of sections if desired

Stitch knowledge required:

Knit, purl, slip stitch for casting on, increasing knitwise, knit 2 together, binding off

Circular needle knitting creates the stockinette stitch by knitting each round, while straight-needle knitting creates the stockinette stitch by knitting one row and then purling one row.  Both stitch methods are used in this pattern.
