Simply Basic © Dog Sweater - Ex-Large

Simply Art © Simply Basic © Dog Sweater  Knitting Pattern

Extra-Large

  Design (c) 2009 Laurie A. E. O'Meara

This pattern is for a simple basic dog sweater pattern that is easy to knit in bulky-weight yarn on one circular needle, with some of the work being on single point needles.  I have knit the sample sweater shown above in vintage wool bulky-weight yarn, for a wonderful, basic sweater with warmth and the dog's comfort in mind, but the pattern can be used with any bulky-weight yarn.

This pattern uses one circular needle (in two different sizes) to knit the majority of the sweater, with the t-strap and back being knit with straight single-point needles.  The result is a simple yet functional sweater that an extra-large-sized dog can walk or run comfortably in.  There are directions for placing optional text on the sweater back.

This sweater is sized to the following measurements:

Neck circumference: 20 inches

Neck to tail length: 30 inches

Neckline to start of leg-holes: 14 inches

Inner leg to inner leg: 10 inches

Circumference around body, measured just behind front legs: 39 inches

Height of dog at shoulders: 25 inches

There are NOT size variations included in this pattern, so please measure your dog carefully if you are not knowledgeable in adjusting patterns to other sizes.

Materials Needed to complete the pattern:

Size 8, 16 inch circular needle

Size 10, 16 inch circular needle

Size 10, 14 inch straight needle pair (you may also want a spare pair for areas of binding off)

1, 5-inch long stitch holders

Bulky-weight yarn, 16 ounces total (It’s always best to have a little extra of the same dye lot on hand)

Darning needle

Stitch knowledge required:

Knit, purl, slip stitch for casting on, increasing knit wise and purl wise, knit 2 together, binding off

Circular needle knitting creates the stockinette stitch by knitting each round, while straight-needle knitting creates the stockinette stitch by knitting one row and then purling one row.  Both stitch methods are used in this pattern.

The photos above show a finished dog sweater made with this pattern.   The second photo shows "Brutus", an 11-year old Australian Shepard / Chow Mixed Breed dog, having his sweater put on him.  His leg is not through the t-strap portion of the sweater yet, and as it was a hot summer day in California, we were not surprised at the look on his face, seeming to say "I'm wearing this now??"  Brutus is a large dog for his breed of Australian Shepard (with some Chow in his line), measuring 30 inches neck to tail.  He is a faithful companion and guard dog.
