SIMPLY ART (c) SHAWLS
My Simply Art (c) Shawl patterns that are listed below are a continuation of my fine-art artistic talents.  Each is a one-of-a-kind design, similar to a "blue-print" to one of my paintings.  The patterns are a way for you to own one of my original designs, and knit yourself an artistic, yet functional item.  These patterns are a wonderful way to showcase just one fleece in home-spun yarn.  There will be some intarsia knitting in each pattern.

Simply Art (c) Shawls Crochet Pattern "Shetland & Stripes"

Crochet

 17 inches x 60 inches

This is a simple pattern to crochet, and the design may be crocheted as directed for colors, or your imagination in the use of color or home-spun wool may be substituted.  The pattern allows you to create a one-of-a-kind item that is both functional and beautiful.  The pattern is written for straight-forward and basic crocheting, allowing the yarn to be the "statement" of the project.

The sample shawl is completed in my own home-spun Shetland wool, but any sport-weight yarn may be used.  The sample shawl utilizes the subtle variances of colors that can be found in a specific breed's sheep fleece.  If you do not spin your own yarn, simply substitute home-spun yarn with commercial yarn, for your own personal artistic statement.

Circular Needle - Size Small

for a large cat or small dog

Easy to knit on one circular needle and straight needles.  This is a very easy and fast project.

My cat has these sweaters, and perhaps because she is a former stray, she appreciates the warmth and comfort the sweater provides.  She wears these occasionally, and because she is an indoor cat, only while indoors.  An elderly cat may also appreciate the added warmth of a sweater. Please use supervision when placing any sweater on your pet cat. The lower half of this sweater will fit the body for almost half the length of the animal.

The sweater will also fit some small dog breeds. The measurement behind the front legs and around the body is 18 inches.

What to knit or crochet with?  Each pattern above is written with commercial yarns or threads as the "standard", unless it is noted to be specifically and only for hand-spun fibers.  This allows for the most consistent gauge of the finished item.  I myself do use commercial yarns and threads for my own items, as well as my own hand-spun yarns, but use the concept of "the right material for the item" as my own rule when crocheting or knitting, or especially when writing patterns.  This is important if you plan to substitute yarns or threads in the patterns.  Generally, as long as the gauge of the materials is the same when used in a swatch of the pattern, the finished item will be consistent to the pattern.

Where does this leave hand-spun wool or cotton?  I have found that spinners vary greatly in their finished yarns - one look at hand-spun yarns for sale will show you this.  When substituting a hand-spun yarn or thread in any of my patterns, please use the generally accepted standard weights such as "size 10 crochet thread-weight", "fingering-weight", "sport-weight", "DK-weight" (light worsted), "worsted-weight", "bulky-weight", and "super-bulky weight".

My own spinning generally gives me a one-ply sport-weight, light DK-weight yarn, unless I specifically spin for thread or fingering-weight.  I love to use my hand-spun yarns with my own patterns, and my personal emphasis generally leans toward knitting a useful and attractive item more than it does to spinning the "perfect" yarn.  Please keep that in mind when using your own hand-spun yarns - if you are like me, they are pretty, very functional, and spun with care, but not necessarily perfectly "balanced" throughout, as a commercial yarn would be.  It is the beauty of hand-spun wool or cotton - that there are very slight variations in the yarn.  I feel it is what adds a very personal touch to the item I am making.

Following the patterns directly, using commercial yarns or threads, will yield the "most-exact" finished gauge and appearance, unless the pattern is written specifically for home-spun yarns..  Using your own knowledge of your own spinning will be your guide for the amount of variation or creativity you may bring to each of my patterns.

One other note:  "Frugal" - It is much more economical to buy raw wool and process it yourself than it is to buy commercial yarn for any project.  You may see how to process wool on my page for Processing Wool Fibers By Hand.  Cotton is slightly a different story.  It is difficult to buy raw cotton in a bulk, economical amount, and the carding and processing is also slightly different due to the fiber length.  Recent weather conditions seem to have affected the cotton industry as well.  There are raw cottons available, but I find it is almost as economical to buy bulk commercial thread, and I save my hand-spun cotton for those "special" items.

Having said that, here are a few personal recommendations for commercial yarn or thread products:

  • Size 10, 100% cotton thread: Aunt Lydia's for general items, DMC "Cebelia" for heirloom items.  These can be used in multiple strands to increase the weight category.

  • Lion Brand yarns for worsted-weight wools and acrylic blends: including Vanna's Choice Acrylic blend yarn (for almost anything, a wonderful yarn), Lion Brand Wool for 100% wool, and my own personal "cannot live without" yarn, Lion Brand Fisherman's Wool, now available in natural ("Soft Cream"). "Oatmeal" (off-white, bleached? )and "Nature's Brown". This Fisherman's Wool is generally one-third the price of other commercial worsted-weight wools, and truly the most economical and in the "Soft Cream" wool, the most beautiful natural wool available, in my opinion.

  • I also recommend Lion Brand for commercial worsted weight cottons.  Their "regular" Lion Brand Cotton is the softest I have used, while their "organic" cotton seemed to have been one of the first on the market.  Their Organic line looks to be similar to Fox Fibre Cotton - a wonderful story of one woman who is trying to preserve native naturally-colored cottons.  Bernat HandiCrafter yarns and Sugar N' Cream cotton yarns are also very nice, but they do not quite have the luster and hand of Lion Brand.

  • Sport-weight and fingering-weight yarns can be more elusive.  I recommend Peruvian Alpaca for fingering-weight yarns.  These can also be used multiple-strand to reach a sport-weight yarn.  I was lucky enough to be given several skeins of a vintage sport-weight Fisherman's Wool, and recommend this for all sport-weight projects, although it does seem to be less available commercially. Sock-weight yarns are similar to my vintage sport-weight Fisherman's Wool, and there are many, many sock-weight yarns available commercially.  Sock yarns, however, are just slightly lighter in weight than sport-weight yarns.  If a pattern calls for a sport-weight yarn, and sock yarns seem too light, then I use DK (it stands for double-knitting) weight, which is a light-weight worsted, in-between sport and worsted.  More popular in Europe, I believe, DK-weight yarn is truly a versatile weight yarn.  Lion Brand Micro-Spun is a very nice DK-weight yarn, and Paton's Astra yarn or Red Heart Sport yarns are wonderful sport-weight yarns.

All yarn companies change their product lines too frequently for my taste, but the yarns and threads shown above are consistently available, unless noted otherwise.
