Simply Art © Simply Basic Socks © Woman's Sock Knitting Pattern For Striped Yarn

  Design (c) 2008 Laurie A. E. O'Meara

This pattern is for a simple basic woman’s sock pattern that is easy to knit in fingering weight yarn on one circular needle.  It is specifically written in order to use the many self-striping sock yarns that are available today, but is also a wonderful pattern for solid colors and variegated yarns. The pattern is written for a woman’s size 7-1/2 to 8-1/2 foot with a circumference at the ball of the foot of 9 inches.

This pattern uses one circular needle (in two different sizes) to knit the majority of the sock, with two sections being knit with straight single-point needles.  There are 5 short seams to sew by hand.  I specifically wrote this pattern for the ease of knitting.  Please read the entire pattern through for best results.

A note about short length circular needles:  9 inch circular needles may be difficult to find, but there are manufacturers who make them.  A company called HiyaHiya makes beautiful bamboo and stainless steel needles in a 9 inch length.  There are also other companies that offer bamboo needles in a 9 inch length.  If you are unable to locate 9 inch circular needles, Boye’s Balene II eleven inch circular needles can be used for this pattern.  They are, actually, a little more comfortable to work with than 9 inch needles, but there will be slightly more “stretch” in each stitch as you are working the sock.  They are not available in the size 1 that I recommend for the ribbing, but are available in size 3.

Materials Needed to complete the pattern:

Size 1, 9 inch circular needle

Size 3, 9 inch circular needle

Size 3, 10 inch straight needle pair

1, 5-inch long stitch holder

Fingering weight yarn, 3.25 ounces total (It’s always best to have a little extra of the same dye lot on hand)

Nylon or monofilament sewing thread

Darning needle, safety pin to mark beginnings and ends of sections if desired

Stitch knowledge required:

Knit, purl, slip stitch for casting on, increasing knitwise, knit 2 together, binding off

Circular needle knitting creates the stockinette stitch by knitting each round, while straight-needle knitting creates the stockinette stitch by knitting one row and then purling one row.  Both stitch methods are used in this pattern.
