Simply Art (c) Simply Basic Socks (c) Spin Kitscopyright 2007 Laurie A.E. O'Meara
Simply Art (c) Simply Basic Socks (c) Spin Kits are kits that allow you to spin your own fingering weight wool or cotton and knit or crochet your own pair of socks. Each kit includes all that you need to make one pair of socks. These kits are priced according to the cost of the materials - once purchased, and with your own additional wool or cotton purchases, unlimited pairs of socks can be made. The Knit Kit includes wool, and the Crochet Kit includes cotton.
Wool Kit: The sock pattern is my own Simply Basic Socks (c) Knitting Pattern, and the hand spindle is one of my Simply Art (c) Hand Spindles. Basic knitting and hand-spinning skills are required to complete the kit. For basic hand-spinning instructions, a copy of my page Spinning Merino Wool With A Hand Spindle is included, which is 5 pages, printed on my home printer. These instructions will work for any fiber. In the Spin and Knit Wool Kit, I include 5 ounces of 100% Merino wool fiber that I have personally hand processed through the washing stages prior to carding. I also include 2 ounces of wool fiber to use as a contrasting color in the ribbing, heel or toe. The wools are hand-picked, carded once, but not fully carded, and there will be minimal to moderate dry vegetative matter in the wool. This should easily card out. I choose high quality or premium wools when putting these kits together. Wools that I choose from to include in the kits: 100% Merino sheep, a short-staple fiber, and for the contrast fiber, 100% Bluefaced Leicester sheep, a beautifully naturally variegated medium length-staple fiber.
Cotton Kit: The sock pattern is my own Simply Basic Socks (c) Crochet Pattern, and the hand spindle is one of my Simply Art (c) Hand Spindles. The pattern is written for flat-crocheted socks that are easy to crochet in size 10 crochet thread (equal to fingering weight hand-spun yarn). When spinning your own cotton yarn, you can either spin it to size 10 thread weight and use two strands, or spin it to fingering weight. Basic crocheting and hand-spinning skills are required to complete the kit. For basic hand-spinning instructions, a printed copy of my page Spinning Cotton With a Hand Spindle is included. In the Spin and Crochet (c) Cotton Kit, I include 6 ounces of 100% Cotton roving fiber. I also include 1 ounce of white 100% nylon fiber to be spun with the cotton for strength in the heel or toe. Very little nylon needs to be spun with the cotton - a few strands of nylon with a fingering weight strand of cotton roving is what I have spun. This gives the cotton both strength and adds the longer-fiber length of nylon to the short-fiber length of cotton. Reading the page mentioned above regarding spinning cotton will give a novice spinner the basic information regarding spinning shorter fibers.
(Please note: If you don't own your own wool or cotton cards for carding, or are new to spinning, fine-tooth wire dog brushes (2) will also work. Square-shaped large brushes work best and are an economical way to card small amounts of fiber.)
