Weaving is a traditional art form that is used for many reasons. One is economy - less yarn is used in weaving than with knitting or crochet. Another reason is the use of the finished fabric. A fabric that is woven has a different drape or end-use than a knitted or crocheted fabric. Tradition plays a large role in weaving as well. There are Navajo traditions, such as the famous rug designs, and many other Native American weaving traditions. There are weavers in virtually every country carrying on their own traditions- such as weaving cotton cloth in India. There is also, of course bead weaving which is just a variation of warp and weft weaving. One of my favorite types of loom to weave on is a backstrap loom. It is a loom that anyone can make from simple sticks that carry the warp. A strap is placed around the back, and the weaver keeps the warp taut by backing away from the loom. Backstrap weaving is very popular around the world. I have also used frame looms, small square or rectangular looms, I have a tri-loom, and a Navajo loom. Over and under, over and under, and weft through warp creates fabric. It can be very relaxing as well as a functional way to work.
